Italy emerged as a unified nation in the 19th century, but the 20th century saw it transition through monarchy, fascism, and a post-World War II republic. Italian mythology evolved with modern influences, but classical myths like those of the Roman pantheon remained relevant in cultural works. In modern times, Italy's artistic and literary scenes have often drawn upon ancient myths while integrating contemporary themes, ensuring the continuity of its mythological heritage. Mythical creatures like fauns and centaurs continue to appear in modern Italian literature and art.
